The first Featured Artist segment will be keyboardist extraordinaire, Derek Sherinian. Derek has a very long career with a number of different musicians and bands so this segment took much longer than expected to put together. I hope you enjoy the playlist and appreciate my efforts. Derek's first professional gig after leaving Berklee College of Music was touring with Buddy Miles. But his first real break was with Alice Cooper during his 1989 Trashes the World tour. Derek joined Dream Theater in 1994 and remained with them until 1999. During the late 1990's Derek co-founded the progressive rock supergroup, Platypus, who released two CD's, When Pus Comes To Shove and Ice Cycles before disbanding in 2000. He was also a member of the supergroup, Jughead, with their self titled release, Jughead. Derek went on to a solo career with his first release, Planet X, which lead to a progressive metal and jazz/rock fusion supergroup of the same name. His solo releases, which number 8 to date, with number 8, The Phoenix, being released on 18 September 2020, feature a plethora of great musicians such as Zakk Wylde, Yngwie Malmsteen, Al Di Meola, Allan Holdsworth, Simon Phillips, Jerry Goodman, among many others, which could be considered supergroup releases in their own right! Planet X releases number 5 to date, 4 of which will be represented (Universe, Live From Oz, Quantum, and Moon Babies). The 5th Planet X release, The Making of Universe, was never released on a label and is a numbered limited edition. Unfortunately I have not been able to locate a copy but will continue to search.
Besides his very lucrative solo career, Derek is a founding member of the supergroup, Black Country Communion, which consists of Joe Bonamassa, Glenn Hughes and Jason Bonham. Derek was also a member of the supergroup, Portnoy, Sheehan, MacAlpine, Sherinian (PSMS) , which went on to release the DVD InstruMENTAL Inspiration and the CD/DVD Live in Tokyo. In 2017 Derek and Mike Portnoy founded the supergroup Sons of Apollo featuring Billy Sheehan, Jeff Scott Soto and Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal. Sons of Apollo has released 3 CD's to date, Psychotic Symphony, Live With The Plovdiv Psychotic Symphony, and MMXX. Derek was also a member of the jazz fusion supergroup, The Fusion Syndicate, on their self titled release, The Fusion Syndicate.
Derek has also made guest appearances on a number of different releases such as Lindsey Boullt's CD Composition, former Whitesnake guitarist John Sykes CD Bad Boy Live, Alice In Chains CD Black Gives Way To Blue, Black Label Society's CD Unblackened and Generation Axe CD The Guitars That Destroyed The World: Live In China. Additionally, Derek has toured with Kiss, Billy Idol and Yngwie Malmsteen.
